Welcome to DynAdmin user's manual. DynAdmin is the administrator's web interface
for managing DynAds software. This document is the help
document for admin panel to explain the objects, links, buttons and actions on the web
interface to help the user for a trouble free operation.
This document can be accessed as a context sensitive help from the admin panel by
clicking the "Help" link located on top-right of every page.
Users
Introduction to DynAdmin
DynAdmin is the user's web interface for managing and reporting ads.
You must supply your user name and password in order to gain access to DynAdmin.
Initial user name and password of the administrator are determined
by using the setup program, setup.pl, by the person who installed the product.
This version of DynAdmin tracks users
through cookies. So be sure to enable cookies on your browser.
On top of every page, quick jump links to major
functions of DynAdmin are displayed. These links provide easy navigation. The 'Help'
link is context sensitive and displays the help page for the current DynAdmin screen.
Under the main menu links, a status bar is placed. Status bar displays the name
of the menu currently displayed, and the system error or warning messages.
In general, DynAdmin displays database items in 2 views: list view and record (edit) view.
The administrator can set the number of items to display per page in list views.
DynAdmin remembers the last view type during the session, and displays that view
when an unclear request is done. For example, if you click to the "Categories" quick link,
then DynAdmin displays the last category view. The first requests in the session always
displays list views.
Most of the database listing and editing menus include a navigation
bar on the right side of the bar under the status bar. Use the navigation bar to traverse
the items in a database for both list and edit views.
Admin web interface is password protected. You must supply your user name and password
in order to gain access to the admin panel.
If this is the first time the script is invoked, use the initial user name and password
that are specified during the setup phase.
Admin web interface is protected from abuse usage by limiting the access from the abusing
visitor's IP address for a certain period of time, if the number of failed logins exceeds
a predetermined limit in a certain time interval. The parameters are specified during
the installation of the script. Visitor's IP adress is stored for every failed login.
After a successful login, if a user does not create any activity for a certain time
duration, then the user is automatically logged out of the system.
Cookies must be enabled on your browser in order to keep track of the users.
Main Menu

ad reference in the ad group, then a "No ad references are added yet" message is displayed.
You can reference as many ads as you want in an ad group. The same ad can be referenced more than
once.
The order of the appearance of the ads in the group reflects their retrieval order
for 'sequential' and 'retrieve all' selection schemes.

Add/Edit Ad Reference Table
Under the task bar and navigation bar, ad reference editing table resides. This table
is used for either adding a new reference at the end of the ad group list, or for editing
and existing ad reference. When the ad group edit view is first activated, the ad reference
table is in add mode. When the user clicks the link on the No field of an ad reference,
the ad reference table enters to the edit mode for the clicked ad reference.
In the add mode the leftmost cell of the table displays "Add New Ad
Reference" message and in edit mode the leftmost cell displays "Edit Ad Reference No xx"
message.
The Category and Ad drop-down menus list the category and its ads.
To obtain the ads of another category press the >> button. In the Weight
field enter the relative weight of the ad reference with respect to other ads in the ad
group. Check the Disable check box if you want to disable the ad reference.
Press the Add >> button or the Update >> button to add or save
the ad reference.
Ad Reference Table
The ad references in the particular ad group are listed in this table. If there is no
ad reference added yet, then a message is displayed instead of an empty table.
- Remove button and Check boxes
- are used for removing the selected ad references from the ad group.
- No column
- shows the number of ad reference in the ad group. If you click the link,
then the ad reference is edited in the ad reference add/edit table.
- Category column
- shows the name of the category of the ad.
- Ad Name column
- shows the name of the ad.
- Weight column
- shows the value of the weight assigned to the ad in this group.
Weights are used when selecting ads randomly from the ad group. The weight of an ad reference
determines the frequency of selection of it with respect to the weights of the other ads
in the ad group. If weight is 0 (zero), the ad will never be selected for random ad selection.
The probability of the selection of an ad is equal to the "Weight of the ad reference"
divided by the "Sum of the weights of all the ad references in the group".
If the weights of the all ads are equal and not zero, then all ads in the group have equal
selection probability. Weight field is not used for other selection schemes.
- Disable button and Check boxes
- are used for disableing and enabling of the ad references of the ad group.
This entry only shows that the ad is disabled/enabled in this ad group.
Disabled ad references are excluded from selection (i.e. they are not delivered to
the requesting browser). If there is no enabled ad in an ad group then a default
ad content, which is set in the configuration files, is delivered to the browser.
When a category or an ad is disabled (enabled) from the edit category/ad
pages or as a result of an automatic disable schedule, the entries of the ad in the ad groups
also reflect the new status. That is to say, if a category is disabled (enabled) then
all ad references of the category in all ad groups are also disabled (enabled).
Similarly, if an ad is disabled (enabled) then all references of the ad in all ad groups
are also disabled (enabled). Finally, When you disable (enable) an ad reference in an ad group,
only that ad reference is disabled (enabled).
Delete an Ad Group
When the 'Delete' button on the ad group list view or the 'DELETE' link on the ad group edit
view are clicked, a confirmation dialog is displayed.
- << CANCEL link
- cancels the delete operation and returns to the calling ad group view.
- CONFIRM link
- deletes the indicated ad group completely.
This operation is NOT recoverable.
HTML Code Generator
This dialog is for generating HTML codes for requesting the ads from the DynAds
delivery engine. The HTML code generator only supports basic access/delivery methods.
For all options and capabilities of the delivery engine, consult to DynAds delivery engine
reference manual.
The generated HTML codes are displayed in a new window. Copy and paste the code to your
web page. The code segment is displayed in an editable text box. You can make changes to
the code if you like. For some types of access methods, an example run of the generated
code is displayed under the text box. By clicking the "Refresh View" button, you can
refresh the view to see how it is working. In addition, if you have made some changes
to the html code, then "Refresh View" button will reflect the results of those
modifications also. When you are satisfied with the code, select and copy it
(ctrl+A, and ctrl+C for Windows machines). Then paste (Ctrl+V for Windows machines) it onto
your web page.
Task Bar Buttons and Links
- UP link
- Returns to the Main Menu.
- << CANCEL link
- returns to the ad group view pages
- Get HTML Code in New Window button
- generates the html access code and displays it in a new window
(or in the previously opened window).
Fields
- Ad Group Name
- is the name of the ad group for which the html code will be
generated. The ads will be selected from this ad group.
- Display Position Name
- is the name of the location to where the ads will be
delivered. By default, DynAds assigns the name of the group name to the display position.
You can assign any name you like.
If you are going to display ads from the same ad group in more than one display
positions, then you should assign different names to each position. Otherwise, the
DynAds can not differentiate the display positions while reporting. In addition,
some delivery methods use the name of the display position as the name of the
container of the ad content. It is a good practice to assign a unique name for each
location you display (access) the ad. As a rule of thumb, you can produce display position
names by concatenating the name of the web page and an abbreviation such as "top_left" or
"bottom_banner".
- Script URL
- is the URL of the delivery engine, ad.pl. If you have changed the path of the
engine, you can modify the url generated by DynAds.
- Ad Selection Method
- indicates how to select the ads within the ad group.
- Random
- option specifies a weighted random selection of ad.
- Sequential
- option specifies that the ad must be selected sequentially. DynAds delivery
engine keeps track of the last ad a particular visitor delivered, and selects the next
(previous) ad in the ad group circularly. The state information is stored in cookies
on the visitor's browser. If, however, visitor's browser does not support cookies, or it is
the fist time the visitor visits the site, then either a specific ad or
a random ad is selected to start with at your choice.
Another important issue is the case when you use html containers
(WINDOWSs, FRAMEs, IFRAMEs, and OBJECTs) for ad
display with auto-refresh feature is on. Then, during the visit of the visitor, ad
delivery engine does NOT require cookies to be on for a sequential selection.
That means that, you can display your ads in sequence for any browser.
Other options for sequential selection are:
- Ad Rotation Direction
- specifies if the ads are rotated in forward or backward direction. If not
specified in the query string of the requesting url, then the direction is
retrieved from the visitor's cookies. If no cookie for the sequence direction is found
then 'forward' direction is assumed.
- Ad No
- specifies the index of the ad in the ad group to select. Select this option
by checking the check box. If specified in the requesting url, then overrides
every setting, and only the specified ad is selected. Use this option only if you
want to select a specific ad. If this option is not specified, then the cookies
of the visitor are checked to find out the last selected ad no for the display
position given. If no cookie is found, then the following 'init' option is checked.
- Init
- specifies the ad no if ad no can not be deduced from the query string or from
cookies. If stated, the ad indicated is selected. Otherwise, the ad to be selected is
determined by the random selection method. Select this option by checking the check
box.
- All
- option specifies that all of the active ads in the ad group must be selected and

is specified in seconds. A 0 (zero) period disables auto-refreshing. Auto-refresh
feature is only applicable to WINDOW, FRAME, IFRAME, and OBJECT containers.

- Ad Access and Delivery Methods
- These options specifies how the selected ads are delivered and displayed. DynAds
ad server formats the ad contents to make them compatible with the delivery method.
- SSI and ASP
- SSI and ASP are server side technologies. Though they are quite different, they
use the same access statement for executing local scripts.
Note that, in general, cookies are not allowed in server side scripts.
Therefore, sequential selection does not work for server side technologies.
- Remote Perl Script
- In order to access the ad contents from a local or remote location, use
this option. The ad content will be delivered in a Perl scalar variable.
Note that, in general, cookies are not allowed in server side scripts.
Therefore, sequential selection does not work for server side technologies.
- PHP
- In order to access the ad contents from a PHP page use
this option. Note that, in general, cookies are not allowed in server side scripts.
Therefore, sequential selection does not work for server side technologies.
- Image, IMG tag
- This option generates a HTML code than can only display banners. IMG option also
provides link redirection through use of cookies. Your ad content must include
an IMG tag. This option does not support 'All' selection method.
- Frameset Frame, FRAME tag
- When you want to display your ads in a frame use this option. The generated
html code must be pasted to a frame set document as one of the frames of the
frame set.
- Inline Frame, IFRAME tag
- IFRAME is an embedded frame inside your document. It is very useful for real time
ad rotation, without refreshing your browser.
- Object, OBJECT tag
- OBJECT tag is more general than IFRAME but less supported by the current browsers.
You can use it as exactly the way IFRAME is used.
- Pop-up window
- This option generates a JavaScript code that opens a pop-up window. The retrieved
ads will be displayed inside the window.
- Pop-under window
- This option generates a JavaScript code that opens a window under the main
browser window. The retrieved ads will be displayed inside the window.
- JavaScript Paste, SCRIPT tag
- This option is replacement for SSI, as Browser Side Include (BSI). Today,
more than 95% of the internet surfers use a JavaScript capable browser. The code
generated by this option can paste ANY ad content on the web page including other
SCRIPT tags, images, text. The retrieved ad content is displayed immediately
during the page loading. The ad contents are not stored for further referencing.
- Load Ad as JavaScript Array
- Unlike JavaScript paste option, the code generated by this option will save the
retrieved ads in a JavaScript array object. The name of the array object is the name
of the display position name. The array object will be available for the life
time of the script on the page. Thus you can make any modifications on the ad content,
and the way its displayed.
- Load JavaScript DAG API
- This option generates a code that loads the Dynamic HTML DAG API, a JavaScript class
library interface to deal with dynamically storing, managing and displaying the ads
interactively on the browser side. Place the code on your page before any other SCRIPT
tag that references DAG API.
- Load Ad as JavaScript DAG Object
- This option is similar to 'Load Ad as JavaScript Array' option. However,
the ads are loaded to the browser as a DAG class object, instead of array object.
With the help of DAG class API, you can interactively display and manage your ads.
- Load Ad as cookie
- This option generates a html code that loads a dummy image to the browser.
In addition, the code instructs the DynAds delivery engine to set the selected ads
contents as cookies on the browser. Use DAG class API to retrieve the ads from the
cookie. In addition, you can refresh the SRC property of the IMG tag in JavaScript
to refresh the content of the ad without reloading the browser.

a default "BrokenLinks" category which reports invalid delivery and redirection
request. If a delivery or redirection request fails, DynAds reports this request as a
broken link in the BrokenLinks category. You can select more than 1 category in the
list by pressing the 'Ctrl' key down and clicking the category name with the mouse.
- From Time
- The beginning time for the reports. The records with a time label earlier than this
date/time are excluded from the generated reports. By default "From Time" is set to
1 month earlier than the current GMT time. "From Time" and "To Time" define an
analysis time window for which the reports are generated. Enter the starting Year
in the text box. Select the starting Month, Day, and Hour from the drop-down lists.
- To Time
- The end time for the reports. The records with a time label later than this
date/time are excluded from the generated reports. By default "To Time" is set to

Select the end Month, Day, and Hour from the drop-down lists.
- Period
- The "Period" determine how the analysis time window is divided into time segments.
The provided 10 options lead to a rich set of time analysis reports.
The options on the first row divides the analysis window into sequential
time segments. Thus, they are for generating progress reports. The options on the
second row divide the analysis time window into periodic time segments. Thus, they
are used for histogram reports.
- Log
- Option triggers the generation of log reports. In log
reports, the time resolution is one second. Unlike other reports,
in log reports the records are displayed in the time order. The exact Date/time,
IP of visitor, the url of referring page, the name of the display position,
the name of the category and ad name, and the number of views and clicks are
reported. The following options have no effect on Log reports: "Use referer URL
for position", "Unique Visitors", "Use Graphics Bars in the reports" and "Report
Parameter Order". Check the options "Each ad of category" and "Each display position"
if individual ad and display position names are to be reported.

segments from the start time to the end time. The results show the click and view
counts for the particular hour of time. Use this option to obtain

- Generate Report for
-
- Each ad of category
- If this option is cleared, then the click and view
counts of all ads of the category are consolidated for the category to obtain
summary results for the category. If this option is checked, then the result for
individual ads of the category are generated separately.
- Each display position
- If this option is cleared, then display
positions are ignored on the reports. If the option is checked, then the result for
individual display positions are generated separately.
- Use referer URL for position
- If the option is checked, then
reports for each referer URL will be generated instead of the display positions.
- Unique visitors
- If the option is checked, then
instead of the number of views and number of clicks, the number of unique visitors
that viewed or clicked the ad are reported. No that, the uniqueness is valid
only for the other parameters (date/time, category/ad name, display positions) are
not changing (for the single row a report).
- Use graphic bars in the reports
- If the option is checked, then
view count, click count and click/view ratio are represented with small red graphics
bars. Graphics bars help to compare the results easily.
- Report Parameter Order
- Option changes the the order of report parameters in order to organize the reports
better suited for different comparisons. The report parameters are, Category
(plus ad name), Date or time, Display position name or referer URL. This simple
approach is very useful to compare very different situations. The information
obtained easily from a table with a particular ordering would be very hard to
obtain from a table with another ordering since the data would be scattered around
the report.
